84. Unleashing the Power of Medicinal Mushrooms: Nature's Gift to Holistic Wellness
In the realm of herbalism, few of nature's bounties have garnered as much attention and admiration as medicinal or functional mushrooms. These fascinating fungi hold an ancient legacy of promoting well-being, with a rich history of use in traditional medicine across various cultures. In China, there is a 5000-year history of use. In Eastern Europe and Russia, just as long. As the modern world seeks to rediscover the wonders of plant-based, organic healing, medicinal mushrooms have emerged as potent allies in the pursuit of holistic wellness. In this blog post, we'll explore the captivating power of these medicinal fungi and how Clinical Herbalist Donna Troy Cleary of Spiral Herbal Remedies and her staff can guide you on a transformative journey.
The Renaissance of Medicinal Mushrooms
Throughout history, mushrooms have been revered for their unique properties, and their potential health benefits are now making a resurgence in the world of Herbalism. These fungi are rich in bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, triterpenes, and antioxidants, which contribute to their potential health-promoting effects.
Among the myriad species, some of the most notable medicinal mushrooms include:
Reishi (Ganoderma Lucidum): Also known as the "The Mushroom of Immortality," Reishi has been treasured in traditional Chinese medicine for 5000 years. It contains anti-inflammatories, antihistamines, antioxidants, and anti-carcinogens and is believed to support general well-being and promote balance in the immune system.
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus): This unique-looking mushroom contains properties that can help stimulate Nerve Growth Factor and has been linked to potential benefits for cognitive health and nervous system support.
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus): Found growing on birch trees in colder regions. In addition to the properties listed about the mushrooms above, Chaga is thought to help support gut and skin health.
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor): This colorful mushroom is rich in immune-modulating polysaccharides and is used routinely in parts of Europe as an adjunct to Breast Cancer treatment.
Harnessing the Potential of Medicinal Mushrooms
In Brooklyn's bustling streets, an herbalist's haven awaits you – Spiral Herbal Remedies houses a diverse array of medicinal mushrooms. Donna Troy Cleary, Clinical Herbalist and Former Registered Nurse possesses profound knowledge of these fungi, understanding their unique properties and potential benefits for holistic wellness. Her expertise and the training of her staff allow all who work at Spiral Herbal Remedies to provide guidance on incorporating medicinal mushrooms into your daily routine to support overall well-being.
What is the best way to extract the medicinal properties of Mushrooms?
Medicinal mushrooms contain a fiber called Chitin, which renders them indigestible. Grinding up the mushrooms into a powder doesn't help their digestibility, they have to be extracted. (Lion's Mane is edible but double extraction ensures all of the properties are present in the tincture.) Some properties in the mushrooms are only soluble in water and some are only soluble in alcohol. They need to be extracted in both and then combined together so all of their properties are in the tincture...
The other thing to look for when purchasing medicinal mushrooms is that the product only contains the fruiting bodies of the mushrooms. You should not see mycelium listed in the ingredients. The mycelium is the root-like structure of the fungus. Since Medicinal Mushrooms grow on hardwood trees in the wild, it can only be harvested when mushrooms are grown indoors, in sawdust. While mycelium may contain medicinal properties, sawdust does not. Sawdust adds extra bulk and weight to products but has no medicinal benefits. At Spiral Herbal Remedies, our mushrooms are double-extracted and we do not use the mycelium.
Why Choose All-Natural Healing with Medicinal Mushrooms?
Holistic Approach: Medicinal mushrooms offer a holistic approach to promoting well-being, and supporting balance and harmony within the body.
Immune Support: Many medicinal mushrooms have potential immune-modulating properties, which may aid the body's natural defenses and/or calm an overactive immune system such as in Autoimmune Diseases.
Natural Antioxidants: The antioxidants found in medicinal mushrooms help combat free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and promoting cellular health.
Gentle and Nourishing: Medicinal mushrooms are generally well-tolerated, making them suitable for long-term use without the harsh side effects commonly associated with synthetic medicines.

You can purchase our ethically foraged or outdoor-grown medicinal mushrooms here online by clicking the links below. Clinical Herbalist, Donna Troy Cleary has found that a blend of a few mushrooms (not too many) yields the best results. Otherwise, there isn't enough of each mushroom to make a difference. Half of every bottle is a blend of two Reishi Mushrooms (Ganoderma Lucidum and Ganoderma Tsugae). The other half is either Lion's Mane (Nerve Blend), Turkey Tail (Turkey Tail and Reishi), or Chaga (Reishi Maintain).
Or stop by our brick-and-mortar shop located at 810 Washington Ave in Brooklyn, NY.
To benefit from each mushroom, Donna rotates through the blends: two months of one blend, two months of another, and so on. It's always a good practice to take a few weeks off every three months. This helps reset the body.
