These fertility sculptures speak to the generative body through the lense of Baya Weaver Bird nests, which are astonishingly humanoid. After males lure females into their nests for mating, they then retreat to their unfinished bachelor nests to lure the next female.
There is an audio component with the installation. It is a recording of me whistling birdsongs from memory. I've thrown in a few cat calls as well. Vimeo link here.

11 x 5 x 6 inches yarn, up-cycled grocery bags for stuffing, tree limb.
Based on the Baya Weaver bird nest, this gendered nest reflects the power of this domestic space. Male birds weave a nest that resembles a phallus, attract a female, mate and then move on to an incomplete nest, called a bachelor nest. He then attracts another female, completes the nest and mates.

butts and such gendered stool series.
2016, 38 x 20 x 20 inches. Found cigarette butt disposal can, chair, yarn.
A chair has always been a stand in for a human body. In the gendered stool series, I add anatomy that transform them into fertility sculptures.
In this case a cigarette (butt) bucket becomes an opening in a crevice that suggests either the vulva or the buttox. Animated knit additions could be either phallic or breasts.
birth tree
2016, 79 x 38 x 25 inches. Found coatrack, brake line, air mask, yarn.
A found air mask becomes a uterus with leafy ovaries. A coatrack sprouting a brake line, becomes a tree-like form.
The tree is an archetypal symbol of breath, healing, connection.
The Druids and Celtic mysticism believed that certain trees were sacred and birth dates, associated with certain trees could predict personality types.

this sculpture was made from yarn spun entirely on a drop splindle with uncombed fleece, literally one section of fleece at a time. This time consuming process allowed me to expose the wiry end of each section, giving it a glorious texture. I added raw fleece to the outer edge to add a coarse halo.

4th leg gendered stool series
2016, 43 x 23 x 25 inches, found chair, bricks, verdigri knob, conduit, garden hose, yarn.
A certain male appendage has been referred to as a 3rd leg...
The weight of the "brick" on the front perfectly counterbalances the absence of the brick under the back right leg. The conduit and hose feminizes this macho figure - evoking a boa, yet another slang for this male appendage.
Handspun yarn. Furthest left was done on a drop spindle, the others with a borrowed spinning wheel. The golden yarn was spun from fleece given to me by someone who raised the sheep and dyed the yarn herself, which adds a communal effort to the materials.
